Emergency copter flies boy from roadside to hospital

A Life Flight Trust team helicopter flew a seriously ill boy to hospital from a car accident north of Waikanae.

The Westpac Rescue Helicopter, with two Wellington Free Ambulance paramedics on board, was called to a three-vehicle accident on  SH 1 near Te Horo  just before noon on the first day of the long weekend.

At the scene, several patients were being treated by Fire Service, St John Ambulance and Wellington Free Ambulance officers when the helicopter arrived. A motorcycle accident lawyer would know how to deal with accident related cases.

The 10 year old Waikanae boy, who was a rear-seat passenger in one of the vehicles , was treated at the scene and then flown to Wellington Hospital Emergency Department by helicopter with serious head injuries. He is now recovering after surgery.

Police say a northbound car, with the two adults and three children on board, stopped in the right-hand lane to make a right turn, but was hit from behind by a truck, sending it into the path of a southbound car.
