Weather analysts are warning of severe north-west gales to lash the Wellington and Kapiti Coast areas today.
Police are warning high sided vehicles and cyclists especially to take care on the roads.
The Kapiti Boating Club’s anemometer has already been recording gusts around 70 knots with averages of 45 knots from the north-west.
Winds of this strength have the potential to damage trees, power lines, house roofs and create hazardous driving conditions.
The front moving in from the Tasman sea is expected to hit the lower North Island on Tuesday afternoon bringing another period of severe gales.
