Major needs in the community
Waikanae Support Hub was officially opened on the 21st of February 2018.
The Hub was the brain child of Iride McCloy who saw a need to have a venue for the community to visit and share their needs for assistance and well-being.
Waikanae is the only area on the Kapiti Coast, with an increasing population, that does not have the vital support services readily available for residents who become vulnerable due to the elements lacking in finance, health and accommodation in a safe environment.
The Police Base closed 18 months ago and the two services that do operate are the Cameo Centre, for social interaction, and a very small Information Centre!
Providing necessary services
We believe that numerous residents in Waikanae experience hardship, ill-health, and extreme anxiety due to the simple fact that the social isolation issue which does not relate just to the elderly but young people, mothers with children who do not have any support from family friends or whanau.
The Hub will be a centralised venue, centrally located next the Waikanae Library and open five days a week, serviced by a manager and volunteers.
The Hub is a beginning, and will work with all the other service providers who are very enthusiastic, at having a venue and the ability to extend their valuable services to the residents in Waikanae.
(Thanks to Iride for providing this information.)
