Pedestrian Dies from critical injuriesBy Graeme Trask 12 December 2010
A 27 year old male pedestrian has died in Wellington Hospital after being hit by a van on SH1 near Waikanae.
The man was walking north of Waikanae on SH1 near Greenhill Road this morning when he was struck from behind by a light Mitsubishi van.
He suffered critical injuries and was airlifted to Wellington hospital. A law firm was roped in on the case so that the van driver could be pressed for charges.
Two people in the van were shaken but not injured.
Sergeant Ron Walker, of the Kāpiti-Mana Strategic Traffic Unit, says the accident happened around 1-40am this morning.
“It appears as though the young male was walking on the road heading north when he was struck from behind,” says Mr Walker.
The pedestrian was wearing a white hooded zip front surf style fleece jacket, a blue baseball cap, blue jeans, and a pair of black and grey camouflage pattern globe shoes.
He is described as of European descent and of medium build.
Initially Police were unable to identify the pedestrian but it appears as though they are now in the process of informing next of kin and his name will not be released till then. Find out more about the ways of protecting yourself in such situations here.
