Potential Kapiti Mayoral candidates are being invited to address the public at the Paraparaumu Beach Market on Saturday 8th June.
This is an initiative of the Friends of Free Speech who are guardians for Kapiti Speakers’ Corner in Iver Trask Place, Paraparaumu. The Friends have decided to shift their normal Saturday speaking slot to the market and to start the speeches that day at 10am. The event will be chaired by former Kapiti Councillor (and Independent Editor), Alan Tristram.
Friends of Free Speech say there are a number of people who have revealed themselves as candidates for the top political role in the district and it’s time for them to be heard.
“In some ways it is like the street corner meetings that are less common these days” they said.
This is the first time that Kapiti Speakers’ Corner has moved away from its designated site, and the Friends say that to some extent it’s a case of taking the speeches to the people, rather than the people choosing to visit the speakers.
