Loving Vincent – Brief Review

Fascinating hand-painted animation

By John Granville

This can only be seen on quite small screens in boutique cinemas such as the Waikanae.

It is the first fully painted animated film in history.

Seven-years in the making, it is primarily by Polish couple Dorota Kobiela and Hugh Welchman.

The final days of the master

It is a story of the conflicting stories about Vincent van Gogh’s death and final days and the possible reasons and principal people involved in the tragedy.

On his deathbed van Gogh claimed he had shot himself with the intent to commit suicide, but various theories cast doubt on this.

It is a fascinating animation, hand painted to appear like the swirls and colours of a van Gogh painting.
