Anzac day tournament in Porirua

Porirua Basketball Association held an ANZAC Day Tournament on Friday 25 April at the Te Rauparaha Arena in Porirua.

This tournament was for Representative Teams from the Capital Zone – Wellington, Hutt Valley, Porirua and Kapiti. Kapiti Basketball Association entered their U15 Boys Team Coached by Keir Maxwell and managed by Jacqui Shearman and their U19 Boys Team coached by Steve Botica and managed by Tania Urner.

Experience for the under 19 team

The Kapiti Under 19 Boys Team played three games in one day, the team finished with 1 win and 2 losses.

Coach Steve Botica said “The second game against Porirua was exciting  We had an awful first quarter, but played exciting basketball to draw level in the 4th quarter only to lose by four points in the end. The tournament was a great experience for the team providing us with a few things to work on before the Queen’s Birthday weekend tournament here in Kapiti, where we hope to qualify for the U19Nationals to be held in July in Nelson”.

A taste of the big occasion for the Under 15 team

This tournament for the KBA U15 Boys team was their first team games.

Coach Keir Maxwell said “It was a great experience for many of the players whohadn’t played in front of such large crowds, or against the best in theregion. The scores were very close in each game and it showed the greattalent in Basketball up here on the Kapiti Coast. Like the U19’s the U15Boys are looking forward to the Qualifying Tournament being held in Kapition Queen’s Birthday Weekend and playing in front of a home crowd”.

Angelo Robinson, Director of Kapiti Basketball Association said  “both teams played well at the Porirua Tournament and it was great to see them in action, and also with lots of spectator support. The players all know now what they have to work on to prepare and be ready for the BBNZ  QualifyingTournament”.

KBA hosting the Queen’s Birthday qualifying tournament

Kapiti Basketball Association will be hosting the Capital Zone Qualifying Tournament in Kapiti at Queen’s Birthday Weekend (Saturday & Sunday) at Paraparaumu College.

This Tournament will be for the final seedings and placings in each age group for boys and girls to see who will represent the Capital Zone at the BBNZ National Tournaments.

  • The U19’s National Tournament will be held in Nelson in July
  • the U15’s National Tournament will be held in Wellington in July.

The Queen’s Birthday Weekend Tournament here in Kapiti will be a big event with some excellent basketball across all the age groups on show and we invite everyone  to come down and see our Kapiti teams in action.
