Without these vital skill sets … we would not be able to run and play the game.
A successful training session for officials
By Angelo Robinson
On Sunday 15 June Kapiti Basketball Association held a Basketball Referee’s Training Course. The course was aimed at anyone interested in wanting to learn to referee or just brush up on the rules of basketball. It also gave current referees the chance to update and up-skill on the new rules. We had over 50 people attend the course from junior players right through to adults.
The Referee presenters were Basketball New Zealand referees Deslea Wrathall and Yalla Edwards – Yalla is also an NBL referee and officiated last year at the NBL semi-finals. They both covered a lot of ground at the course, showed examples and answered lots of questions on rules and interpretations.
Increasing the pool of referees
KBA hopes that as a result of holding these FREE courses, more players, teachers and parents will learn the skills for refereeing and gain the confidence to start refereeing at Junior and Senior College Basketball games. Refereeing courses help players learn the rules, increases their understanding of the game and can improve their performance.
We have more courses coming up:
- Coaching – for those interested in learning to coach Basketball,
- Scorebench Training
- a further follow-up Referee Course.
Without these vital skill sets for Coaches, Referees and Scorebench people we would not be able to run and play the game. They are invaluable!
