Ralph McAllister reports that I’LL TELL YOU THIS FOR NOTHING, written and performed by Kate Jason Smith, haa been playing to packed houses at Circa, together with MILORD GOFFREDO, written and performed by Jan Bolwell.
‘Both one-hour plays are at all times, compulsively interesting stories, the former centred on Kate’s mother Phyllis and the latter, Jan’s father Geoffrey and their respective experiences in the Second World War,’ says Ralph.
‘Jason Smith delineates her mother’s strength and courage and is at her best and most moving as her mother in old age, when less is more.
Unfortunately, too often ,other characters are declaimed and caricatured ,which in this small theatre did not fit easily with our ears.
But the pride and love which emanate from the performance is a worthy tribute to her mother and was recognised by many of the audience standing at the end of the performance.
Jan Bolwell revisits her father’s story
Jan Bolwell is revisiting her father at war and the none too peaceful readjustment to life after prisoner of war escapes and Italian courage.
Interspersed with brief humorous dance bits and superb period photos this new interpretation is a triumph of sensitivity and teamwork, directed by Kerryn Palmer.
Live theatre is back at Circa and this double bill is a triumph to celebrate.
But make sure you book for this ‘two for the price of one.’
