Crafting in stone and bronze
By Kate Hartmann
Donna Clarke’s Finding Balance, a small show of bronze and Oamaru stone works, opens at Tutere Gallery and Creative Space on Sunday March 11.
Donna will be here from 10:00 am until 2:00 pm to not only talk about her work but also to demonstrate some of the processes that go into creating such pieces. The works are collectively called ‘Finding Balance’ as Donna explains: It has been an adventure in pushing the point of balance in wax, bronze, stone and life. A crazy combination but heaps of fun!
Donna has been working with Oamaru stone for many years now, bronze joining her body of materials in the past few years.
Bronze and stone come together
Those two materials have up till now largely been kept in separate works, not combined into one until this year when Donna felt they naturally came together to tell a personal story. As she explains:
The bronze story is of my Mother and Grandmother and of fun times learning to ice cakes and play with clay.
The stone story speaks of my love and thankfulness for my step parents who have always supported me, in particular with many a delivery of stone over the years.
When they come together, the combination speaks of playfulness and memories of many hours of fun playing and building with my sons.
These works emanate a feeling of being balanced on a wave, enjoying the ride… just like in life!
This collection will be on show in the gallery from Sunday the 11th of March through till Sunday the 1st of April.
(Tutere Gallery and Creative Space is open from 10 am until 4 pm Friday, Saturday and Sundays.)
