Civil Union critic issues a new challenge to her opponents
By Alan TristramDeb Burton, of Waikanae, who used the Speakers’ Corner platform last Saturday to oppose gay marriage, has answered critics who’ve attacked her views in the ‘Comments’ section.
For some reason, her earlier replies failed to ‘stick’ in the Comments column (no interference editorially!), so we’ve decided to give prominence to her arguments in this piece.
“Who is the bigot?’
By Deb BurtonApparently a gremlin has spirited away all the comments I’ve made to you guys.
So who’s not listening, who is the bigot?
Defined as one blindly devoted to a belief… I’ve gone back and forth on the issue over the years – partly in response to some of the myths I’ve mentioned…
In fact the “10% are homosexuals” has only just exploded in my mind!! If you aren’t open minded, you are a bigot…
I’ve had to deal with homosexual issues in my family, and love is my first and formost response…
Alan Tristram is a good unbiased journalist in that he allowed me to appear in his paper – are you saying he should only print his own, or your opinions? That is bigotry I think!.
As for Jesus – he didn’t mention every crime in the world in the Gospels, that doesn’t mean drug dealing etc etc isn’t an evil thing… The argument isn’t sound.
Now I have to go to a work meeting (unpaid) I’ve set up to work out some cool ways of helping people feel at home in an institution… Looking forward to good discussions with those of you who who are open minded… Deb
Hi Debbie
I refer to part of your quote from Timothy:9-11. ” perverts (arsenokoitai ” those that lie with males”)
I have lain with a male and have four beautiful children to prove it.
As you have children, how do you explain how you got them?
argue about it with God ..
Ok God, why have you let thus ignorant bunch of baboons destroy your ‘planet’ and why are you letting us make about 200 species go extinct per day?
Why are you letting us utterly destroy our children’s chances of living on this planet?
Why are you letting us go extinct?
Because there is no bloody god, and only uneducated idiots believe in the invisible man in the sky.
The ‘god” theory didn’t work for the Easter Islanders and it will not work this time round ether.
Does no humans = no god? I guess cockroaches might like to worship something, so maybe god will not be retired after our demise.
And sexual preference doesn’t change how stupid you are, as clearly if the ‘gays’ want to get married ‘in his name’ they are just as dumb.
We are at 400 ppm and fast heading for literally ‘hell on earth’ yet we focus on such utter trivia.
From Deb Burton:
To clarify, over my 62 years I have spent time trying to work out what was a good way to think about homosexuality, and have finally settled firmly on my stance, which happens to line up with the Bible – so by philosophy and religion I am convinced that it isn’t the best way to live… Pull my grammar apart if you wish, it seems I’ve communicated well enough to say that someone ‘out there’ is thinking differently from what appears to be popular opinion (yet may still be at least 50/50).I do feel a little like a “voice in the wilderness” but as far as speaking out for God – I’ve heard so much rubbish from people about what God has said, in both the Old and New Testaments and as a Bible reader and something of a scholar (reading Greek) that I wanted people to be clear about it…
Here is 1 Timothy 1:9-11 “We also know that law is made not for the righteous but for lawbreakers and rebels, the ungodly and sinful, the unholy and irreligious; for those who kill their fathers or mothers, for murderers, for adulterers and perverts [arsenokoitai – “those who lie with males”], for slave traders and liars and perjurers – and for whatever else is contrary to the sound doctrine and conforms to the glorious gospel of the blessed God, which he entrusted to me. (Context 1 Timothy 1:5-20) Romans 1:26; Corinthians 6:9-11; Jude1:4-8 are other verses – but argue about it with God, I don’t need to defend His stance, I just need to let you know about it!
I fully support Alan Tristram highlighting Deb Burton’s views, whatever they are at the moment. Perhaps he’ll highlight them again on the next swing as she goes “back and forth on the issue” and finds herself at speaker’s corner, this time championing same sex marriage.
It’s good of Mr Tristram to remind us that there are those out there who maintain odd viewpoints. And while there is never room for complacency, to be reminded that a view that was once considered mainstream is now relegated to a somewhat grammatically challenged, self-apponted spokesperson for God, preaching from the Old Testament around the back of the KCDC council building.
Hello Deb. Thanks for your piece.
We are sorry you had difficulties with this section, but hopefully it will work well in future — Editor
