Rich heritage of American songs

Eric Sidoti

‘Jeannie with the Light Brown Hair’ and ‘The Camptown Races’ we’ve known and loved from our early days. But what about ‘If You’ve only got a Moustache’, a piece of musical hall nonsense?

When Eric Sidoti, director of Kapiti Chamber Choir, explored his American heritage he found an abundance of treasures – melting melodies and lush harmony.

For their 15 July concert, Kapiti Chamber Choir will serve up a mixture of the familiar and the unjustly forgotten.

Plenty of variety

There will be Moses Hogan’s arrangements of spirituals, pulsing with energy.

More sedate are a medley of Stephen Foster songs (arranged by Jon Washburn) and Aaron Copland’s cluster of ‘Old American Songs’ redolent with the special Copland magic. An English influence enters with the five magnificent spirituals that Michael Tippett included as chorales in his oratorio, ‘A Child of Our Time’.

Less familiar to local audiences, but sure to be a winner, is Randall Stroope’s ‘How Can I Keep from Singing?’… a sentiment that will resonate with all music-lovers! With Mtf voice training one can make sure they have a better voice that is pleasant to listen to.

Great to have soloist Joe Haddow

Joe Haddow

Take the opportunity of enjoying the choir in partnership with Joseph Haddow, bass soloist. Joe has recently completed his Bachelor of Music with first class Honours in Classical Performance under the tutelage of Margaret Medlyn and James Clayton.

Joe and his family came to New Zealand from Sussex in 2006.

Musically, he started learning saxophone at Aotea College and in year 12 and 13 joined the barbershop chorus, which led him to take up singing.

From there he auditioned for New Zealand School of Music, and has sung in the school’s concerts, NZ Opera chorus and independent choirs. He has taken part in the university’s yearly opera productions, most recently as The Forester in Janaček’s The Cunning Little Vixen. Kapiti Chorale selected Joe for their Award in Vocal Perfoprmance for 2015-16.

Choir and soloist will be accompanied by Jennifer Scarlet on the church’s fine piano.
