I preferred netball early on but basketball gradually took over. It’s a lot faster and more aggressive than netball. Jacinta Beckley

Kapiti Basketball player Jacinta Beckley recently arrived home from Perth, Australia, after playing for the NZ U20 Women’s Team at the Australian State Championships. And in a week she leaves to take up her scholarship at Seattle University USA.
Jacinta will join the Seattle Redhawks.
Back here, it’s been her second year in the NZ team. As always this is a tough tournament for the Women’s Team.
The Australian teams are always well trained and well-disciplined and have very tall timber! Last year the Women’s U20 Team came 8th, and this year improved their placing by coming 6th. Jacinta was captain of the team this year and top scored 5 out of the 6 games. She proved to be a good leader on and off court. Jacinta was 6th on the leader board for average points per game and she was top in the NZ team for rebounds.
It was extremely hot and uncomfortable playing conditions and it was very hard for the New Zealanders to adjust to the temperatures. Once again though it was an amazing experience for Jacinta and she certainly learnt a lot.
Off to Seattle
Next Friday 28 March Jacinta leaves to take up her scholarship at Seattle University USA. This is an extremely exciting time for Jacinta and she is ready to take on all the new challenges ahead of her.
Jacinta will join the Seattle Redhawks who won the 2013 Western Athletic Conference regular season title. The Redhawks Coaching Staff are very excited about Jacinta joining their team and programme, and posted Jacinta’s signing on the Seattle University website – http://www.goseattleu.com/ViewArticle.dbml?SPSID=89903
Beckley, who is 1.81cm tall, has often played as a forward in New Zealand but is expected to play as a guard for Seattle University. We have been working on her guard skills, says Peter Gosnell Director of Communications NZ Basketball Academy said. She’s got a very solid technique on her jump shot and is a good shooter.
Achieving the dream through hard work
Jacinta has worked hard, had a focused goal and now her dream is coming true. She has worked hard on and off the court. She has made sure that the basketball challenges were being met and also the strict academic standards that must be achieved before any player can be considered for a US university scholarship. Jacinta has ticked all the boxes. Beckley has also played volleyball, basketball and indoor netball.
Jacinta’s basketball career has gone from strength to strength. We at Kapiti Basketball are very proud of her and her achievements and know she will do us, her family and the Kapiti Community proud.
