Its that time again!
Whitebaiters will be out in force again shortly as the countdown to August 15th comes along.
Waikanae river has been a place over years where many friendships have been made or lost.
On a beautiful sunny day the banks of the river can be lined with a variety of people all enjoying the chance to catch some of those wriggly delicacies.
…………….especially when word is out that the bait are running — and on a weekend it can be quite congested.
Many stories have been told about the large catches, some in excess of 100kgs. As some whitebaiters would say: ‘You have to be here just about everyday if you want to be around for the big catch’.
Although there are many tales from the experienced when the whitebait can run, it can happen when you least expect it.
But don’t forget there are strict rules in place on sizes of nets and the distances between nets.
The whitebaiting season runs from August 15th through to November 30th
