Tribute from Ōtaki

Queenie Rikihana farewells Adrian and Marei

Our Ōtaki correspondent Queenie Rikihana has sent us this tribute and farewell to Adrian and Marei Webster, who died together so tragically at Paekakariki three days ago.
Queenie knew them both well. And, as an Ōtaki Community Board member, worked with Adrian on the wider affairs of the Kapiti Coast Council.
It is particularly appropriate of Queenie to comment, as Adrian and Marei were staunch supporters of all things Māori and of the Treaty of Waitangi. Here is Queenie Rikihana’s tribute —

Haere haere haere atu ra e korua

“Haere haere haere atu ra e korua… Adrian raua ko Marei,

E korua – haere atu ki tua o the arai. Haere atu ki te huihuinga o te Kahurangi, ki o ihi, ki o mana, ki o wehi, ki ohou iwi. Ki te Kahui-ariki e tatari mai na korua.

Farewell as you both go to the place behind the veil, to the point of no return. To the gathering place of the multitudes of your relatives. To the aristocratic ancestors who await you (both).

Farewell – Adrian, what an inspiration you were to your community and to those who follow.

I saw the wonderful letter in the latest (March 3-9) Listener where you were giving a blow-by-blow account of how we got to huge executive pay scales thanks to the 1988 State Sector Act.

Your physical well being was letting your down, but not your considerable brain power. I salute you…”
