Top Writers Coming for Kāpiti Retreat

Six award-winning authors and teachers will mentor other writers at a retreat in Kāpiti from February 28 to March 1 next year

Anahera Gildea, Catherine Chidgey, Chris Tse, Kerry Lane, Paddy Richardson and Pip Desmond will hold workshops and discuss fiction, poetry, essays, editing and ethics — among other topics.

The annual Kāpiti Writers’ Retreat — run by Kahini — is now in its 5th year.

Attracting top writers

It regularly attracts more than 60 writers from across the country and abroad.

It’s a weekend of workshops, discussions and learning.
Gildea, who is a leading poet, essayist and teacher, returns this year with a new course on pūrākau, lyric essay and poetry.

Her 2018 course on trauma narratives was the first to sell out and her new venture looks likely to do the same.

Anahera Gildea

Anahera Gildea says, ‘For me the Kahini retreat is an opportunity to work alongside each other as writers, sharing and learning and creating.

Writing is often a solitary experience so a retreat like this enables kaituhi of all genres to pool their strengths, interrogate questions about craft and process, and to form lasting connections with like-minded others who paint with words.’

Nadine Hura, a regular attendee

The first person to sign up this year was writer and essayist Nadine Hura. She’s a regular attendee at the Retreat.

Hura says, ‘Of all the writers’ forums and events in the calendar year, Kahini is the one I will always make time for.

‘Kahini is different to other retreats. It’s not just the quality of the presenters, it’s that the weekend doesn’t feel too packed or rushed. You have time to reflect and go into depth. Classes are small in size and focused.’ I

For five years Kirsten Le Harivel, writer and Director of Kahini, has been bringing writers together for the annual Retreat, which is held at El Rancho in Waikanae Beach. Find out more: www.kahini.org/the-2020-kapiti-writers-retreat/
