The Day Prince Philip And Princess Elizabeth Flew Into Our Airport

People may have forgotten but Prince Philip and the Queen once flew into our local airport.

It was early in 1950, and the Royal couple arrived on a DC-3 (Dakota), speically commissoned for their NZ travels.

The short visit was part of a hugely popular Royal Tour, attrracting large crowds, even in small NZ settlements.

In this case they were accompanied by Duncan MacIntyre, the then Minister of Maori Affairs.
