Telstra Jobs Going?

80 Paraparaumu

Jobs in Jeopardy

April 21,2010

Up to 80 workers at the TelstraClear call centre in Paraparaumu may lose their jobs soon, says the workers’ union.

It says this is because TelstraClear is planning to move jobs overseas.

TelstraClear has announced that its  ‘re-structuring’ could see 120 jobs go — 50 in Paraparaumu and 80 in Christchurch.

But the Engineering,Printing and Manfacturing Union says TelstraClear is planning to move 148 jobs to the Philippines.

It says this would mean all 80 jobs at the Paraparaumu centre would be lost.

A union spokesman, John Kerr says:” This is all about accessing cheap labour overseas.

“A lot of our members are young women with young families to support.

“It does not even make good business sense– there will be huge damage to the brand.”

However, TelstraClear says the restructuring is still a proposal and no decision has yet been made.

It says staff will be consulted about alternatives to staff cuts.
