A must see
By Bruce Dryden
This play is absolutely outstanding.
The story of Annie who left her two young sons and abusive husband in Timaru, to live with and marry Henry Chaffey at Asbestos Cottage deep in the Kahurangi National Park.
For 40 years Annie only once left this bush hut to go to Nelson Hospital, while Henry would often tramp to Takaka or the Motueka Valley for supplies.
The story is told by Martine Baanringer of the Drama Lab theatre company and a Golden Bay drama teacher.
My walking group walks to Asbestos Cottage most years, and we are always intrigued by this bit of unique New Zealand history.
Maurice Shadbolt has called it New Zealand’s greatest love story and Jim Henderson has written the book.
See it before the film comes out!
It‘s on in Wellington 21 to 24 March. Book now.
