Poets to the People presenter Gill Ward says ‘if the library book cuts are to help fix up Waikanae Library physically, I don’t know whether it is legal — taking that money and using it for a building project? ‘
Comment on this please?
‘Remember this area harbors many elderly who need to read and can’t afford to be buying books, also a huge population of children who we encourage to read books and use libraries.
‘This council are making themselves look like philistines.
‘Everything is moving out: Air NZ, Fonterra, Whitireia, good heavens what next?
Previously Kapiti had a good name for culture
‘We have such a good name up here for the arts and literature.
‘Personally I have fronted Poets to the People ten months of the year for 15 years.
‘Important poets come to us from all over NZ with delight and enthusiasm.
‘We are profit free and are able to pay our guest poet well from our $5 cover charge as we put in all the work and publicity ourselves and have had simply wonderful support from many cafes over the years.
‘Get with it all of you people we put there on the council. Use your creativity.‘
