Photo of the Week: Sarajevo

Gavrilo Princip

It’s 104 years ago this month that the city of Sarajevo in the Austro-Hungarian Empire became a household name.

A teenage Bosnian-Serb, Gavrilo Princip, assassinated the heir to the Empire’s throne, and set in train events that would take the great European powers into a war that would eventually spread around the world from the south Atlantic to East Africa.

Christchurch identity, Richard Belton, has been in the city, which is now the capital of Bosnia-Herzegovina.

He is shown standing in front of a window that commemorates Princip’s momentous deed.
