Photo of the Week: Norwegian Supporters

Millions watched the Tour go by!

The enthusiastic support of spectators adds to the colour and atmosphere of the famous Tour de France. This is especially so through the towns and villages the riders pass through. The footpaths beside the narrow streets are always packed which cheering supporters.

On the mountain climbs the spectators are even more exuberant and many dress up in national costume and wave their flags. A regular onlooker is a devil with his trident. (See alongside.)

Sometimes the enthusiasm boils over, especially when the supporters crowd onto the narrow roads and the cyclists have to thread their way through a narrow path. And there are idiots who run alongside beside the bike riders.

Occasionally accidents occur and this year Italan Vincenzo Nibali had the bag handle of a spectator caught on his handlebars. He took a tumble and had to  retire from the race.
