Back where it belongs
By Roger Childs
The Marines Hut, which has been restored by MenzShed in Waikanae Beach, is now on site and the finishing touches to the exterior have been made. This small structure which housed four Marines in 1942-3, will eventually be fully fitted inside, and videos will feature aspects of life for the Marines at that time.
The huts were originally for officers and the ranks lived in large tents located on concrete “tent decks”. Later, as more huts were constructed, these Marines moved into better accommodation.
The restored hut will be officially “opened” on Monday 29 May 2017, at the American Memorial Day Service. The Service at the Marines Memorial in Queen Elizabeth Park, starts at 10.00am and everyone is welcome.
