Peter Daniel

ROAD OF NATIONAL SIGNIFICANCE BUT

NOT FOR KAPITI

16th December 2009

The decision by NZTA did not come as “a big surprise” said Kapiti Coast District Councillor Peter Daniel.

Mr Daniel said, “KCDC had been working very hard on planning and buying land for the original Western Link Road which would have serviced all Kapiti Coasters.”

“Now we will in essence have an express bypass along the same route and there will not be access accept at three points all a great distance apart.”

The only candle of hope that Councillor Daniel saw was that many or most of the business people of Kapiti including the Kapiti Chamber of Commerce came out against the Western Link route for an expressway or motorway.

Mr Daniel said, “I thought that might sway the decision but no.”

And he said,”I personally never wanted an expressway or or motorway at all as petrol prices will inevitably rise and rail will be the only viable alternative to the majority of the population.”

“This is called a Road on National Significance and is not being built for Kapiti.”
