Police say a 74-year-old man drowned after getting in difficulties while swimming with his daughter (51) off Peka Peka Beach yesterday.
Just before 6pm, the Lower Hutt man and his daughter both got in to difficulties while swimming.
The woman managed to swim to shore and was taken to Wellington Hospital in a serious condition.
But the man was been unable to get ashore and disappeared from view.
Victim pulled ashore
About 20 minutes later, a member of the public located him in the water just off the beach and pulled him ashore.
But efforts to to revive him failed — and he was pronounced dead by ambulance staff who went to the scene.
The police say the death will be reported to the Coroner.
The details of the dead man will not be released until the next of kin have been told.
