The email to the Kapiti Independent said it all – the Paraparaumu Primary School was on fire.
The Junior Reporters’ Club sent us the headline email: ‘Our School on fire tonight.’
The Reporters’ Club was set up earlier this year — and now has a major story on its hands.
Eight fire trucks were called early yesterday evening (about 7.15pm) to fight the fire at the Kapiti Coast school , which has been left severely damaged after the overnight blaze.
A statement on Facebook says the fire has burned down all (four) junior classrooms, and the school will be closed until further notice.
The library has also been burnt out — and smoke and heat has damaged other rooms at the school.
Fire-fighters stayed overnight to get the fire under control and one firefighter was taken to hospital with heat exhaustion.
Police and fire officers are investigating whether the blaze was lit by an arsonist and parents are being asked whether they can help with childcare.
Police also are asking drivers to avoid Himemoa Street and Ruapehu Street in Paraparaumu.
The KCDC announced this morning that there are road blocks at the intersection of Ruapehu and Ruahine Streets, and at the intersection of Hinemoa and Epiha Streets.
It adds: “Mayor Ross Church will be visiting the site this morning to support the Principal and school community.”
