Kapiti Coast motorists have been warned to take extreme care on the Otaki Gorge road following a massive slip during the recent heavy rain.
The Kapiti Coast District Council says there’s been a large dropout on the road.
The KCDC says it occurred about 16kms along the road from SH1, between the Roaring Meg and the Campground at the Otaki Forks.
It says a total of about 200 cubic meters of bank has dropped down to the river.
The area has been fenced off and the roadway is down to a single lane.
The KCDC’s Network Contracts Engineer, Neil Williams, says the dropout has most likely been caused by the heavy rain over the last few days.
He says a structural wall will need to be to be built to buttress the bank on the river side — and it could be up to a month before the work is complete.
Motorists have been asked to take care in using the road in the meantime.
