KCDC critic romps home in Community Board poll
By Alan Tristram
One of the Kapiti Coast Council’s most vociferous critics, Jackie Elliott, has romped home in the by-election for a seat on the Ōtaki Community Board.
Ms Elliott heads the ASK US FIRST movement which has campaigned against water meters, getting more than 7,000 signatures for a referendum on meters – which the Council then ignored.
The by-election was held ( under the STV system) for an extraordinary vacancy on the Board, caused when Chair Don Moselen resigned in a scandal over his illegal use of military decorations.
The final vote count is:
Jackie Elliot, 1223;
Christine Papps, 1052;
Annie Bythell, 711.
Jacie Elliott will be sworn in at the next regular meeting of the Ōtaki Community Board at 7pm on December 4.
A total of 2437 votes were received which equates to 40.47% of the eligible voters in the Ōtaki Community Board area.
What is illegal about taping a public meeting?
And I always thought people in glass houses shouldn’t throw stones.
While I congratulate Jackie, it is a pity that her apology to Councillor Penny Gaylor for illegally taping, manipulating that tape and then posting the altered tape on her website was not in the papers until polling finished – in spite of a request from KCDC lawyers to take down the site (which was done) and post the apology immediately. That was approximately 3 weeks ago.
Jackie campaigned on ‘new standards’ for Councillors. I hope this is not an example of her new standards.
