Calling all book lovers — you can expect an end to library fines in Kapiti next year.
KIN understands the Council is moving towards ending the fines from July.
It’s an idea whose time has come around Aotearoa,
Auckland has ditched them, while libraries in Taranaki- Stratford and South Taranaki are already committed to a no-fine regime. New Plymouth say they’ll look at it in next year’s annual plan.
Both Nelson and Selwyn outside Christchurch are joining the no-fine club.
There’s also the question- what about the lost income from the fines- this can be as much as $40.000.
Kāpiti councillors will discuss this one next year. but the general thinking is that libraries should be accessible to everyone, regardless of their bank balances.
