Feilding Man Charged
26 May 2010
A man has been charged with the murder of Marice McGregor and will appear in the Whanganui District court this morning.
Marice was last seen alive on SH4 on Monday, 19 April by Lismore Forest. On the evening of Wednesday, 12 May.
Marice, a 45 year old sickness beneficiary was located by Police in a ravine close to the highway; approximately 36km north of where she was last seen. An autopsy revealed that Marice had sustained head injuries.
Police Central Districts Communications manager, Kim Perks said that a 42 year old man from Feilding had been arrested on Tuesday night and charged with Marice McGregor’s murder.
Marice went missing after going to the Lismore forest area to collect some firewood on April 19 however she wasn’t reported missing until a week later.
Marice was eventually found further north on SH4 from Lismore forest and down in a ravine on May 12, and it took another week to reveal that the body found was that of Marice McGregor due to the body being in a bad state of decomposition.
In the early part of the investigation it was revealed that Marices cellphone had been located in Feilding after a telecommunications company had said that the cellphone had been turned on briefly there. The telecommunication company was able to provide to Police a fairly accurate location of the phone.
This lead Police to a Feilding house which was examined as part of their search.
McGregor family Statement
We always wanted to know how Marice died so to hear that someone has been charged is a relief. If she did die at the hands of someone else the justice system now has a chance to do its work and we are pleased about that. We would also like to take the opportunity to thank those people who over the last few weeks have contacted the Police with information and hopefully will continue to do so.
