Mayoral Candidate Deplores Cuts In Books Budget

Kapiti Mayoral candidate Gwynn Compton says the slashing of the book budget illustrates how the impacts of the Waikanae Library debacle aren’t just limited to the millions in repair costs we now face.

He says: ‘We will see communities across Kāpiti further short-changed with fewer new books on our shelves.

‘Libraries are vital community spaces and we need to be investing in them, not carrying on with the short-term cost cutting culture that got us into this mess in the first place and ends up costing us more in the long run anyway.

I totally agree Gwyn! It’s always a battle to get Councils to fund their libraries well and yet the libraries are key assets in communities. I’ve lived on the Coast for nearly 4 years now and I’ve been impressed with the library service and the people it draws in. Let’s work to keep up the book budget and all the services the library offers for the future wellbeing of the Kapiti community.
