Kāpiti Council Wants Airport Land Restored To Maori

Alan Tristram reports KCDC have passed a unanimous resolution, moved by the Mayor, supporting returning airport land to the original Maori owners from whom it was taken under the Public Works Act in 1939.

This resolution came after an impassioned plea by descendants of the original Maori owners to Councillors that they back their efforts to seek the return of the land to public ownership and to keep the airport operating.

It’s understood by KIN that the Council wants the Government to foot the bill to get the land back from its present business owners.

Much of the Airport land is now subject to a claim before the
Waitangi Tribunal.

Text of Resolution:

Moved:   Mayor K Gurunathan / Seconder: Cr James Cootes

‘This Council, in supporting the call by the original owners of the airport land for the return of their ancestral land, requests the CEO to bring back a staff report on progressing this matter.’  CARRIED
