Kāpiti Libraries Buzzing

11th January 2010

Kāpiti Coast District Libraries staff have been working twice as hard during the holidays as issues of books, DVDs, and CDs have doubled.

“The extra workload is partly due to the fact the libraries haven’t been open as many days per week,” says Circulation Services Librarian, Ian Trim, of the Paraparaumu Library.

“Nonetheless, over 10,500 transactions in one day across the district is a pretty impressive figure,” he says.

The 10,500 items were either issued to customers or returned on January  5 after the libraries had been closed Friday, Saturday and Monday for New Year.

The previous Tuesday, December29, saw over 9,000 transactions across the district after the Christmas closures.

The Sunday after New Year at Paraparaumu Library was also full on.

Normally during the four-hour Sunday opening library staff deal with about 650 issues and 750 returns.

On  Sunday, January 3, there were more than a thousand issues and one and half thousand returns – nearly double the usual quantity.

“We are delighted with the turn out,” says Leslie Clague, District Libraries Manager. “Reading certainly doesn’t seem to be dead on the Kāpiti Coast!”

She adds:” And it’s wonderful to see families leaving the library with piles of books.”
