Horowhenua Mayoralty Changes in ‘Progess’ Results

In the Horowhenua, first results show Bernie Wanden has replaced the sitting mayor Michael Feyen.

Mayor: Bernie Wanden (5255 votes)

Councillors: David Allan, Ross Bramigan (Kere Kere Ward), Robert Ketu (Miranui Ward), Victoria Kaye-Simmons, Jo Mason, Sam Jennings, Piri-Hira Tukapua, Todd Isaacs (Levin Ward), Wayne Bishop, Christine Mitchell (Waiopehu Ward).

Former Mayor Michael Feyen faced formidable opposition in office from conservative councillors opposed to his reforming ideals.

Wanden well-known in the area

One-term councillor Bernie Wanden ha=d joined incumbent mayor Michael Feyen and Cr Victoria Kaye-Simmons as candidates seeking the chains.

Although Wanden, 64, is relatively new to the council, he thought he had a “pretty good handle on where the community sits” as a result of his involvement with the community.

Wanden is a justice of the peace, a Rotarian, has been on boards, including at Horowhenua College, as well as being a local business owner, having owned a book store on Oxford St for 34 years.

His favourite book is reportedly Pillars of the Earth, by Ken Follett, which is about the building of a cathedral in the fictional town of Kingsbridge, England.
