The KCDC says the section of Ōtaki Gorge Road known as Blue Bluff is still unstable, and will probably remain closed for the peak summer period.
This area, 12 kilometres in from SH1, has recently shown significant movement, and is in the process of slipping.
The Kāpiti Coast Council says: “Expert geotechnical advice is that further slipping could occur at any time, and it may be sudden and extensive, so for everyone’s safety the road will remain closed.
“Once a slip does occur it will take time to clear and reinstate access, which may include having to construct a new section of road – it is not a quick fix.
Public access may be possible
“Fortunately the Department of Conservation is working to find other public access to the huts and walks in the Tararua Forest Park, which is expected to be open for summer.”
The KCDC says it will keep people posted as the route is confirmed and constructed.
