A Paraparaumu Beach woman is lucky to be alive after being plucked from freezing water 500 metres off the mouth of the Waikanae River mouth.
The woman, suffering extreme hypothermia, was first thought to be a crayfish pot by the fisherman who saw her in the water on Saturday.
“The only reason we knew she was alive was because she was convulsing and vomiting,” he told rescue staff over the marine radio.”
He describing her as being in ‘a very bad way.’
He was met by an waiting emergency staff at Paraparaumu Boating Club and the victim was taken by ambulance to hospital.
Meanwhile, the Kāpiti Marine Charter owner, Ross Leger, deviated from his usual run to Kāpiti Island to go to the scene to check for further people in the water because it was thought she may have children in the water too.
Once conscious, the woman was able to confirm to ambulance staff that her children were at home.
She had gone into the sea to rescue her dog, and became caught in a swift rip which dragged her out; so without doubt the fisherman saved her life.
The dog was later found on the beach waiting, near the woman’s belongings. .
