Councillor Diane Ammundsen says she is pleased for those people who are no longer in danger of losing their homes but thought that the decision by the NZTA was not the right one for this district.

“A large expressway running through the district will sever it and will not provide any local links, I see no local benefit from this road at all” she said.

And she said, “Waikanae Beach will become very isolated.”

Cr Ammundsen also mentioned in particular the effect this decision will have on the Takamore group and Jonathon Smith whose very attractive proposed development was very sensitive to the local environment.

She said, “if this expressway was built to high environmental standards it might save some of our sandhills and wetlands but I do not believe that it will be as the government seems hell bent on getting a road that will save 20 minutes on the journey from Wellington to Levin and that seems to be all they care about.
