Classic Beach Event

Kāpiti Running Club plans third major event

By Roger Childs

The Kapiti Running and Tri Club plans to hold the third Kapiti Classic Beach Races next March.

This year’s event attracted more than 450 entire and a large turnout is expected on Sunday 17 . They  will walk or run a half marathon, 10 km or 5 km; and there will be a 1 km fun run for children.

There will be course changes for the half marathon and 10 km events to make the races more spectator friendly and avoid problems with the tides. The southern turnaround for all races, except the 1 km kids kilometre, will be at Raumati Beach.

All the races will take place in the morning during low tide, starting and finishing at Paraparaumu Beach. The longest event, the half marathon, will consist of two laps and take competitors north towards the Waikanae River and south to Raumati Beach, before heading back to Paraparaumu Beach.

The Kapiti News and City Fitness are the main sponsors, however other local businesses will be encouraged to support the event.

For a $250 contribution towards spot prizes, a business can have naming rights to a particular race. Five of the nine races have already been “sold”.  The other sponsors at this stage are Comfort and Quality Hotels, The Law Connection and The Print Room.

The event is designed to appeal to people of all ages and levels of fitness, and the low entry fees will hopefully attract plenty of participants. This year’s starters ranged in age from 2 to 82. Most of the money raised will go to local charities.
