Christmas Day, Aotearoa, 2019, by Christopher Ruthe

‘Pohutukawa, why so late in flowering?

You almost missed the day.

In a family meal

We share in celebration

A birth most humble

In a manger, -rebellious Jew.

Embracer of the leper

The blind the poor.

And in that embrace affirms

Their centrality to life’s stream.

Today he sees the hectic present buying

Worth, proven

By the size of gifts given

And received,

Head shaking, this child

bringing us to the banquet

Of life that reverberates

In the eternal now

“It is in the giving

We receive

It is in the loving

We live”

And we have the flowering

Oh Pohutukawa!

Merry Christmas

True Christmas

To you all.’
