Waikanae School celebrates its own Olympic opening
In their own Olympic celebration each class at Waikanae School dressed in the colours representing an Olympic nation.
They made flags and banners, and completed a lap of the school courts, in honour of each country – accompanied by the playing of the Chariots of Fire theme song.
An Olympic torch and Olympic flag were carried in by the youngest and oldest children in the school before a group of students presented an Olympic flag to the principal, Mr Bevan Campbell. He then made a speech and declared the games open.

This was followed by fireworks and the release of a cluster of helium balloons.
When weather permits a full day of sporting activities is planned. In class children have been learning about and researching their designated countries, as well as following their Olympic successes and discovering much about Olympic traditions and history.
