A 75-year-old man has been arrested and charged with the murder of a 70-year-old woman at the Costal Villas Retirement Village on Westgate Drive in Raumati.
Police have confirmed the name of the woman who died.
She was 70-year-old Edith Roderique, from Otaki.
Police were called to Metlifecare Coastal Villas about 9.40am yesterday, found the woman dead, and a homicide investigation was launched.
Police later announced the arrest.
The 75-year-old man who was charged with murder appeared in Porirua District Court today.
He was granted permission by the judge to keep his identity secret.
He was charged with killing 70-year-old Edith Roderique between Monday, March 4 and Tuesday, March 5. He entered no plea.
He is due to appear in the High Court at Wellington on March 26.
Police opposed bail, with Judge James Johnston ordering a report into the man’s fitness to stand trial.
A stuff report says Roderique was involved in a Kāpiti Dance Group that holds Sunday afternoon tea dances. When approached, a representative of the group asked for privacy.
Ōtaki Dance Group spokesman Mike Francis said he knew Roderique, a keen dancer.
“She was involved pretty heavily in most of the dance fraternity which is very close out here.”
No-one else sought
Police say they are not seeking anyone else over the woman’s death.
Detective Senior Sergeant Christiaan Barnard says: “Residents can expect to see a continued police presence in Westgate Drive until Friday, as we conduct a scene examination.”
